THE SHORT VERSION

Is Aruba a good fit for you?

Aruba is the most developed and visitor-friendly of the Dutch Caribbean islands: reliable infrastructure, English everywhere, and constant sunshine outside the hurricane belt. But it is an autonomous country with its own admission law, so nobody — not even Dutch nationals — is admitted automatically, and almost everything is imported, so the cost of living bites.

01 · MONEY

What life actually costs

A realistic solo budget, not a backpacker fantasy. Switch lifestyle to see what changes.

€1,770

Housing takes roughly % of the budget — the number that moves most between cities.

Roughly on par with a mid-size US city once rent and imported goods are included (2025–2026).

02 · RESIDENCY

Realistic ways in

Visa names mean little without income thresholds, renewal paths and tax consequences side by side.

BEST MATCH
RETIREMENT

Retiree / independent means

For people aged 55+ with a qualifying pension, annuity or investment income who will not work locally.

  • Age 55+ for the retiree route
  • Prove qualifying guaranteed income
  • No paid local employment allowed
  • Temporary permit; indefinite stay requires 10 years of legal residence
EMPLOYMENT

Work & residence permit (DIMAS)

Job-tied permit sponsored by an Aruban employer via DIMAS.

  • Employer files positive labour advice (DPL)
  • Permit is tied to that specific job
  • MVV may be needed before travel
  • Processing often 3–6 months
INVESTMENT

Investor / business permit

For entrepreneurs establishing or investing in an Aruban business.

  • Real business plan and capital
  • Local economic contribution assessed
  • Company registration required
  • Fees typically US$200–500
03 · THE HONEST PART

Why people stay — and leave

No destination is “perfect.” We show the trade-offs before any affiliate button.

The good

  • Developed, tourist-ready infrastructure and services
  • Outside the main hurricane belt with reliable dry sunshine
  • English spoken almost everywhere
  • Direct flights to the US, Netherlands and Latin America

The trade-offs

  • High cost of living — nearly everything is imported
  • Own admission law: no automatic entry, even for Dutch citizens
  • Job market is narrow and hospitality-dominated
  • Housing near the tourist strip is expensive
04 · WHERE TO LIVE

Three different Arubas

Pick the rhythm first, then the postcode. City, coast and smaller towns solve very different problems.

BEST FOR CONVENIENCE

Oranjestad

Capital: services, shops and cruise crowds

BEST FOR EXPATS

Noord / Palm Beach

Resorts, restaurants and international feel

BEST VALUE

San Nicolas

Cheaper, quieter, arty south end

05 · DAILY LIFE

The things that shape Tuesday

Beyond the scenery: healthcare, safety, internet, taxes, schools and language.

🏥

Healthcare

Good general hospital (HOH) and a mandatory AZV insurance system; complex cases are referred off-island to Colombia or the Netherlands.

🛡️

Safety

One of the safer Caribbean islands. Petty theft and opportunistic break-ins matter more than violent crime.

💻

Internet & work

Solid fibre in populated areas via SETAR; fine for remote work, though the local job market is hospitality-heavy.

🧾

Taxes

No dedicated tax deal for movers; residents face income tax, so structure your affairs before applying.

🎓

Schools

Dutch-curriculum public schools plus a handful of international and private options; choice is limited by island size.

🗣️

Language

English gets you a long way immediately; Papiamento and Dutch help with officialdom and belonging.

06 · YOUR MOVE

A move you can actually follow

Four stages that turn “someday” into a checklist based on your nationality, income and family.

12–8 WEEKS

Choose your route

Check eligibility, official evidence, tax exposure and realistic processing time.

8–4 WEEKS

Build the file

Banking, accommodation, insurance, criminal record and translated documents.

ARRIVAL

Land connected

eSIM, temporary cover, transport, an address and your first local appointments.

FIRST 90 DAYS

Become local

Tax number, banking, healthcare, residency follow-up and utilities.

FREE PLANNING TOOLS

Less reading. Better decisions.

Use the numbers instead of drowning in them.

07 · COMPARE

Not sure about Aruba?

Compare the variables that matter for living somewhere, not the ones that sell holidays.
